The Woo-Woo Now Backed by Science

I’m so glad you could join me for today’s fun and insightful episode! Just let yourself relax for the next few minutes with me while we explore one spiritual (woo-woo) practice that has been proven to have real scientific merit! And if you want to learn about 3 more REALLY woo-woo practices with scientific merit, all you have to do is watch the full episode above.

So for those of you not familiar, woo-woo is the belittling term that’s been given to people and ideas that are considered a little “out there,” “airy-fairy,” or “hippy-dippy.” And woo-woo practices are usually considered to be unfounded or unscientific, but that’s not always the case!

Some examples of these woo-woo, hippy-dippy practices are now mainstream and widely accepted as scientifically beneficial: Things like meditation, yoga, acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology…so we aren’t going to talk about those today because I want to surprise you with a more obscure one that you may not know about.

I just LOVE when spirituality and science come together to bring us new and exciting ways to be healthy and happy! It happens more often than people think or hear about from the media! Okay, so here’s a practice that has been labeled and poked fun of on television and in movies as being REALLY woo-woo:

Burning Sage, also known as ‘Smudging.’

Burning sage is a practice that is typically considered a Native American tribal practice, but it actually dates back to prehistoric times, and it’s been documented as having been used in nearly every corner of the world by our ancient ancestors. They believed that burning sage cleared their space of unwanted spirits, and purified their energy.

Now it’s not just the regular old sage you’d find in your spice rack or your herb garden. The type of sage that is said to have these spiritual, or if you will—magical properties is specifically white sage. So, this white sage is dried in a bundle, and then you light it like you would an incense stick, and typically you go around your space and you just wave the sage around to chase away unwanted spirits or negative energy you don’t want clinging to you, or hanging around. Pretty woo-woo!

Well, it turns out that studies conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information have proven that sage smoke is antimicrobial- meaning it kills bacteria in the air! So yeah, it LITERALLY cleanses the air. In fact, scientists have observed that sage can clear up to 94% of airborne bacteria because it releases negative ions that cancel out the positive ions that are emitted by most bacteria. Not only that, but it also emits ursolic acid, which has strong anti-inflammatory properties. So who’s woo-woo now? Excited to learn about the other 3 majorly woo-woo practices that turned out to be too-true? Watch the full episode now!

The truth is, Spirit doesn’t mind what path we take or methods we choose to get to our place of inner peace. So when I hear woo-woo, I think WOO-HOO! Be you, just be yourself, and find love, peace, and joy in whatever way works for you.
